The IFSW African Region Conference ended today and all the participants were awarded certificates of participation. The Association Representatives had a closed-door meeting sharing experiences on managing associations as well as the professionalization of social work. In Africa, Zimbabwe, South Africa & Namibia are the only countries that have social work regulation mechanisms & frameworks in place. However, other countries are in the process of drafting bills and they are at different stages. One of the lessons is that associations should be careful of creating Councils that can destroy them. Regulating social work is important as it helps to enhance the recognition of the profession, helps to protect clients and members of the public against malpractice and setting minimum standards of practice and training. The conference adopted a communique that will be shared to members via emails.
